"Through the Eyes of an Engineer"
Together with the educational company "Through the Eyes of an Engineer," we developed walking routes through the courtyards and along the embankments of Zamoskvorechye, leading past 19th-century architectural landmarks to modern architectural ensembles.
Additional reasons to visit the hotel
Every route starts at the Krasnye Kholmy complex and leads into an era of its own: imperial grandeur, merchant Art Nouveau, industrial chronicle. Choose a direction and follow the points along the way.
From Balchug to Khitrovka
An Architectural Symphony of Eras
Length: 4 km
Time: 2–2,5 hrs
Start: Hotel's doors
The walk begins on Balchug, a unique artificial island created through remarkable engineering ingenuity. The route offers a captivating panorama of the capital: from the futuristic architecture of the Krasnye Kholmy complex and the avant-garde Narkomtyazhprom Garage to the majestic Stalinist Empire style of Kotelnicheskaya Embankment.
Along the way you will touch on the secrets of 17th-century chambers, unravel the riddle of the "moved" houses, and immerse yourself in the industrial aesthetic of the Smirnov Warehouses. The journey ends at legendary Khitrovka, where, amid old tenement buildings and historic cobblestones, the pages of classic memoirs come to life.
The Heart of Zamoskvorechye
An Aesthetic of Contrasts
Length: 5 km
Time: 2,5–3 hrs
Start: Hotel's doors
An exquisite immersion into the layered history of one of the city's most atmospheric districts. The route begins at the modern Krasnye Kholmy ensemble, whose appearance recalls a monumental fortress, and leads across the Maly Krasnokholmsky Bridge into the historic quarters.
Architectural masterpieces await: from the Gothic mansion of the Bakhrushin family and charming wooden architecture to the vast Sytin printing house, a witness to revolutionary upheaval. The walk is rich in impressions, from the graceful Art Nouveau of the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent and the virtuosic ornamental decoration of the Church in Pyzhi to lavish Elizabethan Baroque. The finale is an encounter with the eastern exoticism of the Tatar Cultural Center and the cinematic "Accordion House," which recreate the character of merchant Moscow.
From Ceremonial Grandeur to Intimate Origins
The Path to Krutitskoye Compound
Length: 6 km
Time: 3 hrs
Start: Hotel's doors
A rare opportunity to see the global scale of a metropolis meet authentic historical heritage. Starting from the Krasnye Kholmy complex, whose form is a striking interpretation of ancient fortifications, we head toward Paveletskaya Square, where the memory of the bustling markets of the past meets the rhythm of the present.
Passing the majestic Paveletsky Railway Station, you will step into the industrial chronicle of Kozhevniki. Here the industrial legacy of the Bakhrushin dynasty intertwines with the avant-garde style of the Kozhevnicheskiye Baths and the exceedingly rare 17th-century chambers. The route concludes with the technical aesthetics of the first pumping station and the elegant house of the merchant Vinogradov, leading to the final, sacred point: the legendary Krutitskoye Compound, suspended outside of time.
